Debunking UV Myths

April 28, 2022

On April 27, 2022, the Washington Post published an article about the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) rebuffing an offer to install UV at its annual dinner. The dinner, with more than 2,000 guests anticipated, will be held indoors. Dr. Fauci, who was invited, declined to attend after assessing his personal risk. It wasn’t our UV that would have been installed, so we can only speak to what Aerapy offers but, to that end, we’d like to address general concerns the WHCA raised about using UV (per the article) and some additional concerns we saw in response to the article on Twitter. For this type of event, Aerapy would have installed our upper air UV units. Depending on the size and layout of the room, we most likely would have installed our patented and award-winning Zone360 in the dining area, and possibly our Zone180 or PSF Series in smaller areas such as the bathrooms and kitchens.

From the article: “WHCA officials said the conversations (about installing UV) came too late in their planning, and that they feared the lights might irritate the eyes of attendees, interfere with servers trying to navigate the ballroom — and even make someone like Biden look blue when addressing the crowd.”

Time to debunk these myths and more when it comes to Aerapy UV.

Installing UV is time intensive. FALSE.

Not all UV manufacturers and UV devices are the same, but Aerapy provides fast, professional turnaround and our germicidal UV devices, including our Zone360, are designed with time-saving features like tool-less design for easier installation and maintenance.

UV can irritate the eyes of event attendees. FALSE.

Properly designed and professionally installed upper air UV devices, like those manufactured by Aerapy, are made to keep the UV light directed up and away from the room occupants, below. Our Zone360 and Zone180 Series feature a louvered design to collimate rays away from the lower room while our PSF Series offers a contained design (we even have a low light option in the PSF Series for rooms where people sleep).

UV can interfere with servers navigating the ballroom. FALSE.

As upper room UV devices, Aerapy UV most certainly would not interfere with servers navigating the ballroom. Our units are installed in restaurants where the only impact they have on servers is creating a healthier work environment by cleaning the air.

UV can make people look blue. FALSE.

Again, our upper air UV devices are installed in the upper portion of an indoor space—either ceiling or wall mounted—and designed to keep UV rays away from the room occupants below. Absolutely no one looks blue.

UV devices are noisy, even in a busy room. FALSE.

Aerapy manufacturers germicidal UV units with fans and units without fans. Our units without fans are virtually noiseless and our units with fans, which offer immediate airflow and faster disinfection, are designed to create minimal additional sound. Our upper air units with fans are used in schools, where the ability to concentrate is paramount, with no issues.

UV devices are not aesthetically pleasing. FALSE.

While aesthetics are arguably subjective, we believe—and our clients would agree—that the sleek, modern designs for our upper air UV devices coordinate with virtually any interior design, including beautifully appointed spaces for fine dining. See photo, above, of Aerapy’s Zone360 suspended from a restaurant ceiling.

Aerapy’s germicidal UV devices clean the air. TRUE.

The truth is not all UV manufacturers are the same. When it comes to debunking UV myths, we can only speak to what we manufacture. If you’re considering UV, be sure to ask questions. Here are some additional truths. Aerapy’s germicidal UV devices:

  • Are ETL safety tested and certified.
  • Are safe for occupied spaces.
  • Achieved a greater than 99.9% reduction in pathogens when independently tested against viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (virus that causes COVID-19), MRSA and other bacteria, mold, and more.
  • Produce no ozone.
  • Come with a 5-year warranty.

Aerapy has been in the business of producing high quality, professionally installed germicidal UV since 2008.
