CDC Ventilation Guidance: Upper-room UVGI and In-duct UVGI Systems for Air Cleaning

December 8, 2020

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidance for ventilation on December 7, 2020, as part of a recommended “layered strategy to reduce exposures to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.” As explained by the CDC, SARS-CoV-2 viral particles more readily spread between people indoors versus outdoors where the particles can quickly disperse and reduce with wind. The lower the concentration of SARS-CoV-2, the less likely the pathogen can be inhaled or fall out of the air to accumulate on surfaces. Unlike the great outdoors, indoor environments need assistance to offset the absence of natural wind and reduce viral concentrations (pathogen load) inside. Upper-room UVGI (aka upper air UV) and in-duct UV systems for HVAC are included in the CDC’s “list of ventilation interventions that can help reduce the concentration of virus particles in the air, such as SARS-CoV-2.” These mitigation tools can also be “effective on their own.”

As recommended in the CDC’s ventilation guidance for reducing exposure to SARS-CoV-2:

“Consider using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as a supplement to help inactivate SARS-CoV-2, especially if options for increasing room ventilation are limited. Upper-room UVGI systems can be used to provide air cleaning within occupied spaces, and in-duct UVGI systems can help enhance air cleaning inside central ventilation systems.”

When third-party tested against the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, Aerapy’s UVGI systems achieved a greater than 99.9% kill rate of the coronavirus in the air and on surface. Read our press release on the testing conducted by an independent laboratory here.

Aerapy’s researched, tested, and study-backed upper-room UVGI and in-duct systems for HVAC harness the power of UV-C. Aerapy products are made in the USA and produce no harmful ozone. Our UV solutions include:

Zone360 (and Zone360X) for upper-room UVGI. Our patented upper air system offers targeted, high-level UV disinfection in high-risk areas. To learn more about how upper air UV works, read “What is Upper Room UVGI?” Available as Zone360 (100cfm fan) or Zone360X (includes remote control and three fan speeds: 100cfm, 200cfm, 530cfm). The upper room 2′ x 2′ unit features 360 degrees of UV air sanitizing and is easily installed in any of type of ceiling (min. 8 ft height) to provide continual air disinfection in 500-1,000 sq. ft. rooms. (Note: Have a smaller room like in a dental office, urgent care room, or school? We have more compact solutions. Contact us for more.) The Zone360 is suitable for indoor environments, including spaces with no HVAC in place, that need immediate airflow, circulation, and disinfection.

PPR Series and PAH Series for in-duct. Designed to fit into any new and existing HVAC (indoor split system), as air enters your air intakes it passes through our in-duct UV systems that neutralize both coil surface and airborne mold, viruses, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms before they circulate throughout your indoor environment. In the recent independent laboratory testing of Aerapy UV equipment, up to 99.97% inactivation of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was achieved in one air pass. Because a live air pass test was conducted, Aerapy’s results are unique among other UV laboratory studies of SARS-CoV-2 inactivation that perform simulated passes. Constant exposure of UV-C germicidal energy with moderate air circulation will help to effectively sanitize pathogens in the air stream. PAH systems are for air handling units. PPR systems are for rooftop or package units.
